Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.
Findings released in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"People purchasing these drugs should be aware of the danger of fast weight regain when the treatment is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery means a reversion to original mass within about 18 months.
Analyzing Therapies
The analysis, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with older methods.
Scientists point out that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually experience a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists propose the way of the injections is key to understanding the heightened weight return.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this medication means hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."
A Chronic Issue?
The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts contend that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.
This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
People who have discontinued the medication report a sudden return of hunger.
"I experienced a switch flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled a patient.
This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Growing Use
Survey data indicate that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.
- Use is more common among women than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success likely depends on ongoing lifestyle support.
