Grammy Recognition

The group are connecting from their homes, where they're resting up after an major tour in support of their fourth album, I Quit.

They're right now processing the news it's been nominated for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the pioneering all-female band ever in consideration for the trophy.

"I follow the announcements every year, so it sort of feels like The Truman Show when your name is read out," says Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"

The weight of the accolade resonates with the band.

"We really set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a significant achievement," continues Alana. "Yet we're just appreciative for the pioneers that inspired us."

Emotional Upheaval and Candor

The record was born from a phase of emotional upheaval. All three sisters ended up single, and the music inhabits that strange liminal space where you're happy to be free, but not yet ready to let go.

The lyrics follow breakups and farewells. The sisters seek love, but not the relationships they've had. You can hear them figuring out in real time who they are becoming.

"That's a perfect summary, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a personal statement. You have to actively work on ignoring the outside opinions and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Evolution of Style

That recent confidence required a different sonic direction – more raw and immediate than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that began with the drums.

"The drum sound is such a specific thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our biography," jokes Alana. "Our motto is, our albums cannot begin until we find the right drum sound."

Stories and Collective Humor

The trio's honesty fueled the album's rollout, where the sisters shared some of their personal horror stories.

Someone ended things with Este over a health concern. Alana shared a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"When you're going through these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no hope," explains Alana. "Thus to be able to find humor in those stories and hear others tell you more outrageous stories, it's incredible."

A Secure Legacy

You can clearly sense a evolution in the band. Now, Haim are more assured of their position in the music world.

They're major draws, with chart-topping albums and an worldwide following.

However the band will always be their primary commitment.

"Me and my siblings have been playing music since I was four," says Alana. "It feels as if nothing else that we were destined for. And I'm really grateful we've made it and we're still going strong."
