The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

Each time a major honors show nears, one notices a demand to include of new categories to acknowledge unsung work and satisfy the hearts of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. So would strategy board titles, which is someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand stands as crucial above others. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and it will always spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason film award organizations don’t do it. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types successfully include a lot of ground, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Think about these this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles of one title, intense tile-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Which classification works between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers released every year lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked completely during that awards season
  • Another creative title received no nominations that year
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked that year
  • Just some puzzle games scraped into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent small games, but the art behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most engaged experiences globally and have been for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals popular creative games for the title of best-selling game of all time; it also contends for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. One could readily select five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these are games that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers are working at the hard edge game development, producing among the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Just like film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait 35 years.
