Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the previous year. This venture was a hallmark of his administration's developmental goals for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The construction of both train projects was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its responsibilities in national projects. They were completed at an rapid speed, surpassing forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently sparked significant questions over safety standards.

- This involves an previous crash this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a key rival party demanded an urgent suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.
This stoppage was requested while awaiting a full independent investigation. The party declared that the situation "demands prompt explanations."
In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in total accordance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these vital undertakings.
