Nepal's Political Scene Witnesses Major Alliance Formed By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable development ahead of next year's general election, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and fatal youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the grievances raised by the new generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which resulted in significant casualties.

"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.

The late summer uprising was sparked by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Terms of the Fresh Electoral Agreement

According to the formal pact, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political leadership. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Government Consultations Taking Place

In a separate event, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several major political leaders. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a collective duty. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and open environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
