Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments made by captain Ben Stokes about the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered this message in several interviews in the wake of England's defeat in the second Ashes against Australia previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors now face a series loss with a match to spare, the captain noted he had allowed his message to "drift around" within the squad.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I required," said the England leader.

However, following Crawley made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" comment after his side suffered a loss in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The team subsequently took a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before this match, Stokes revealed his players had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain alive in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior three years in charge.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," said Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we could do something special entering this Test."

Australia Close of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's wicket late on Saturday came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side 207-6 chasing a notional total of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team require four wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an unassailable three-nil lead after three matches played.

A loss would prolong the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes loss.

This series will be completed in just eleven days of cricket – after England fell the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," said Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. They're a very, very good team. It was inevitably tough touring here to face them. They were the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position In Question

While the opener's performance in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his short-term future in the side, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 in England's second innings on day four, adding to his poor record against Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and averages 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

But, the opener said any notion Pope is under the microscope comes from "the media" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is noise from the outside. There's no discussion of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
