“That was unfortunate. It was essentially an exchange with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones stated during a Tuesday interview. “There was a large group of Dallas supporters—not New York fans, Cowboys fans. The entire stadium was filled with excitement for the Cowboys.”

Jones additionally emphasized that the gesture was entirely unintentional, happening amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I just put up the incorrect digit,” he noted. “It was accidentally done. This is sincere. If you want to call it accidental, you can. But it got corrected pretty quick.”

League Precedent for Proprietor Fines

This incident isn’t the initial instance an NFL owner has been fined for inappropriate behavior. Previous cases include:

• Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper was penalized $300K for tossing a beverage at spectators in January 2024.
• Then Tennessee Titans proprietor Adams was issued a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a comparable offensive signal.

Jones, who is recognized for his publicity flair, reportedly has an estimated wealth of $16 billion, making the fine easily payable for the billionaire owner.
