A trader profited close to $500,000 on the ouster of Nicolás Maduro shortly prior to it was made public, leading to inquiries about potential gains made from non-public details of the event.

Market Movement in Forecasts

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a blockchain-based service, that the Venezuelan president would be removed from office by the close of the month surged in the period preceding former President Trump declared on January 3rd that the Venezuelan leader had been seized.

A particular user, which joined the platform last month and made four bets, all on political events in Venezuela, made more than $nearly half a million from a modest bet of $32,537.

It remains unclear. This unidentified trader had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Probability Spikes Before Announcement

Platform data shows that traders assessed the probability of Maduro's exit at just 6.5% in the midday period of Friday, January 2nd.

However these probabilities had jumped to over 10% by shortly before midnight and spiked dramatically in the first hours of Saturday, suggesting a sudden change in positions immediately prior to the social media post was made.

"This particular bet has all the signs of a transaction based on inside information," said a financial reform advocate.

A small number of other platform users also profited large payouts from similar wagers.

Regulatory Scrutiny Emerges

Politicians are starting to take note.

A bill put forward on recently seeks to ban federal workers from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a market.

Industry Context

Event-driven betting sites have grown significantly in recent years, with users able to predict everything from sports to politics.

This sector were examined under the previous administration. However it has experienced less resistance during the Trump presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is illegal in the securities markets, but there are less oversight in the event betting industry.

An official representative for Kalshi said their site "strictly forbids trading on insider information of any form."
